Since their first release in 2014, Espen Berg (piano), Bárður Reinert Poulsen (bass), and Simon Albertsen (drums) have established themselves as one of the most recognizable piano trios in European jazz. They have toured across Europe, Japan, China, and India, performing sold-out concerts at Ronnie Scott’s in London as well as concert halls in Tokyo, Guangzhou, and Athens. The British magazine Jazz Journal has described them as “one of the best trios performing today.”

With four critically acclaimed albums behind them, the trio has continually challenged and renewed itself through a distinctive blend of complex rhythms, deep harmonic understanding, strong melodies, and an intense, playful interplay. On May 5, their fifth album — Entropies — will be released on the Svale record label.

Entropies explores the tension between order and chaos — the planned and the instinctive. Berg has written a wealth of powerful melodies, but also pushes boundaries with spontaneously composed pieces and polymetric structures that keep both the trio and the listeners on the edge of their seats. Some of the tracks feature contributions from outstanding musicians: Flavia Huarachi (flute), Joakim Munkner (cello), and Nils Olav Johansen (guitar, vocals). At the same time, the trio stands firmly on its own with newly written compositions by Berg, as well as their contemporary interpretation of Sting’s classic “Russians.” Comparisons can be drawn to the music of Craig Taborn, Brad Mehldau, Keith Jarrett, and Nik Bärtsch, but Entropies above all carries a clear and personal signature: an organic interplay where precision and freedom exist side by side, and where the music constantly seems to be in motion.

Espen Berg was described as a “true piano master” by All About Jazz already after his debut album Noctilucent (2012). His latest solo release, The Kempen Concert (2025), was hailed by German radio listeners as “one of the most important piano recordings ever.” Berg was named Sparebank1 SMN Jazz Fellow at Moldejazz in 2016 and became an official Steinway Artist in 2023, and he is active in a number of collaborations with, among others:
